What is the “Cloud”?

What is the cloud? In technology there are tendencies that sometimes, like fashion, one day they are the "must have" and the next one you are deleting all the pictures of you wearing that Hawaiian shirt. Cloud computing is not one of those, the cloud is here to stay.

During the last years there has been a lot of talking about the subject, nevertheless sometimes it is not clear what are we talking about when we use the term "cloud". One of the reasons is that a big number of technologies using the name are services that now use the Internet to provide a service that, before, was offered by the internal company IT system.

The other reason is that "cloud" is a trendy word and everybody wants to use it. It looks like if you are not in the cloud you are nobody so a lot of companies have hurried to add "cloud" to their products names just for marketing proposes.

But what is the cloud? It is based in the principle of virtualising your IT infrastructures in a way that the user could carry on doing what he was doing before but without caring about all the servers, networks, etc, behind it.

One example could be your email service. Years ago most of the SMBs where paying big money to install and maintain an in-house email server but now a lot of them have migrated their accounts to services like Google mail or Microsoft 365 getting rid of the IT infrastructure costs.

The great thing about cloud computing is that most of the time:

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT HOW MUCH RESOURCES YOU WILL USE IN THE FUTURE BECAUSE YOU HAVE THEM ON DEMAND.

Eg: Are you worry that one day you are going to open an email account with Facebook and receive the message "we have reached our limit"? Nah.

Basically, when you move your services:

  • You do not care about the IT infrastructure that supports them.
  • You use the service on demand.
  • Easy budged management.
