Business is from Saturn, IT is from Jupiter...
It never fails to amaze me the fact that, even when today we are leaving in a world full of technology like never before, the gap between the business and IT is getting bigger and bigger. Why is that? IT has managed to infiltrate in many areas of activity, and therefore it is no wonder that it has a great influence over the fate of many businesses. The truth is that nowadays IT has a highly appreciated position that seems to remain up there for a very long amount of time. However, even if IT has a great influence in many places and it can facilitate the task of a business, the truth is that most of the businesses hate IT. Is like if the business were from Saturn and IT from Jupiter.
Does it have to be this way forever? We have decided to further analyse this situation. In this way, if we have a better understanding of this hate, we can come up with innovative solutions that might help the situation.
The truth is that some businesses hate IT because they may do not understand it completely, and therefore it could be overwhelmed to manage. For instance, most of us love the idea of having a private plane (at least I do), getting in at any airport and travelling wherever you want to go, but most of us would not feel confident piloting it! We will need a qualified pilot to do so. The problem starts when you, the business, want to go to Paris ASAP but the pilot insists in making technical stops every 30 minutes to check the plane integrity. Unfortunately, sometimes, this is how it feels between the business and IT. The business wants quick reaction times; dynamic approach to projects and not having to care about IT gibberish and IT is concern about security, capacity and change requests.
The problem is that nowadays the business and IT are in a strong symbiotic relationship. One cannot survive without the other like scones are nothing without the double cream. So, what could be the solution?
They have to learn to live together trusting and collaborating to each other. To achieve this it is necessary for the business to understand that, to understand the real cost of accomplishing your business goals, you need to involve IT the sooner the better. On the other hand, IT should be more proactive towards the business needs. This also means that IT must know the business it is supporting.
These points are easier to achieve for big companies with huge IT departments, unfortunately it becomes more complex when you are a SMB with not enough IT resources onsite and forced to outsource your IT management. Do you feel uneasy sometimes? Is your relationship with your IT outsourcing company like the one you have with the cab driver, where you are constantly checking if they are taking the shorter route to destination or, on the contrary, he is using the longer route to charge you a little bit extra?
If this is your case, please contact us now! At easyIThelp we work hard to understand your business IT needs and to be proactive. We want to help you finding what IT could do for your business and to feel in control again.
